Over the past few months, there has been an on and off discussion about gay apps for smartphones (iPhone or Android) about which ones are good, recommended and why they do or don't work well as tools for meeting interested guys. I have commented on this topic before but thought on more recent update would be timely.
I make the point that there are webapps (which do not have to be purchased from Apple's App store. They operate in the Safari browser (or other browser), and do not have restrictions on whether nudity and sexually explicit photos can be displayed in user profiles.
Actually the three best ones are: Adam4Adam (radar.adam4adam.com), Manhunt.net (for mobile phone), and Dudesnude.com (mobile smartphone version). These sites can triangulate your location and will therefore allow you to see who is online in close by. I've had some limited success in hooking up and making male acquaintances using gay social networking apps, but I find that mostly the iPhone apps are not as useful or user-friendly as the regular browser sites mentioned above.
These are excepts taken from a forum discussion on Dudesnude.com at:

A better alternative is either Adam4adam or Manhunt. They both have PC sites and also web apps which require no downloads (although Manhunt does have an iPhone version too). Since they are mobile phone sites viewable thru a web browser, you don't have restrictions on nudity. Basically, they are equivalent to the Dudesnude mobile site - just without the forums. As fas as popularity, Manhunt and Dudesnude are probably almost as visited as Grindr. Also it really depends on where you are in the world. Jack'd is very popular in Japan, for example, while Scruff is not (yet). By the way, I have a dozen gay social apps and the top 3 web apps too. But I actually rarely make contact with someone because that seems to happen more easily (or not) in person. Greetings from sunny Gran Canaria (poolside) Hola!

You can't see xxx photos of manhunt members unless they send you those photos attached. Otherwise it's restricted.
I have Grindr, but it's become a burden recently as it collapses when one wants to send a photo or shows only the guys you've recently chatted although the setting is 'show everyone'. I used scruff, but didnt like it much or got lucky and I deleted it. Guys on Grindr are easily offended though. I sent my main photo to a couple of guys. One was shocked and asked me what it was on my face. The latter one thought it wasn't his thing although he was ready to come and fuck me. :-/

They all kind of suck. The problem is, there's not a large enough gay market (with men who are willing to post their real photos and contact info on cell phones and ipads) to have a decent sized dating pool. So what you end up with is a small amount of guys on one site, a small amount on the other, and so on. I swear I have seen the same goddamn 10 local guys on each site - nobody new, nothing to write home about. It feels like the gay population is dwindling fast rather than growing - either more guys are staying closeted or they're hiding somewhere else. I am surprised that gay.com didn't get in on all that first and come up with the premier mobile site. I'd much rather see one large site where the majority of gay guys go to rather than 3-4 half-assed sites that suck, and charge money to view small groups of disconnected, mostly uninterested guys who are tired of seeing each other every time they log on.

I was banned on Grindr 10 days ago on the merits of behaving against Terms&Conditions. I sent an e-mail to ask them what exactly I did wrong. All they sent me was to ask me to send the most recent image I used (it was a pic of landscape) profile text and a screen cap of the message stating that I was banned. If they have banned me for having said that I am a bottom, they should ban most of the guys as they use top/bottom as their username. I will delete the app if they don't answer within this week.

Qrushr has stopped working. Purpl has tried to clean up its act and streamline the app but basically failed. Others worth trying to see if there are new people on your area or travel destination are: Pinkmap, Maleforce, Bender, FindFred, Recon, Mister, Hardline, aki-aka, and Gaydar plus those already mentioned most, Grindr, Scruff and Manhunt.
Jack'd has one cool feature: you can look around the global for users far outside your own area.
9monsters has a somewhat similar function and also let you collect 'breeder' points in a kind of game-like format. It debuted on Japan last year but is slowly gaining fans elsewhere.
I still find going to the web apps instead of the apps is more direct and allows explicit photos to be used in the profile. There are also web versions for iphone and Android of Adam4adam, Manhunt.net and Dudesnude.com that show users in your proximity along with explicit sexual photos on their and your own profiles (user can select who gets to see what) and you don't need to bother with Apple ITunes' rules.

Sorry that one is called aki-aka and it includes straight, gay, and bi men and women.
Dlist app doesn't work on my iPhone now, but it is still a website. Anyone else have problems with the Dlist app?
I agree with the main conclusions from others above:
Grindr sucks as an app and as a company.
Hooking up via an social networking app is difficult, and may not be worth the effort. However, it can work at times or fail miserably. Both happened to me over consecutive days last weekend.
I find that having an online gay identity is important (to me personally) in today's media-centered and socially networked world.
There is no need to resort to just one app or to just one way to make friends or find another interested sex partner. Keep you apps open and your eyes wide shut!
P.S. manhunt on safari has links to gay piotr sites who use it to advertise. So you can watch some free gay porn instead of depending in the naked generosity of strangers. Smile! Kelly
